Strega Nona

There is just something about wrapping a little boy in a towel. Pull up the little hood and they look adorable. I have a few of these shots as the boys have grown and I love everyone of them.

This time though, something hit me. Oliver is Strega Nona reincarnated. My son, my second born is literally a old Italian lady who loves pasta.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

Father’s Day Perspective from a Father

I don’t praise myself too often, I am a relatively humble guy, but there are three things I’ve done right in my life and I’ll brag about them whenever I can.

  1. Marrying Stephanie (easy one… I lucked out here. Talk about marrying up!!!)
  2. Being Jackson’s dad (again, easy one. First born son and he’s as close to perfect as any child could ever be)
  3. Being Oliver’s dad (they say the second child is the hardest, but in this case I’d argue that the second child just as near perfect as the first).

There is not a day that goes by that I am not blessed to have these three in my life. Things are not always easy and don’t always go as planned. Work is stressful and there are always bills to pay. But there is one constant guiding light that can brighten any day… being a dad.

I work with children everyday of my life and it’s not easy, but it’s so rewarding to know that you have helped a child succeed. I am lucky because I get to do for a living. I enjoy knowing that others can count on me to support their children just like I would my own children. I consider it honor that parents would trust me with their most prized “possession” (not a great word choice, but the best I could do to convey the importance of one’s child). However much I love being an elementary school educator, I can honestly say there is NO BETTER job in life than being a father to these two little dudes.

Jackson and Oliver, thanks for making me a dad… I love you both very much!

Pre-K Graduation

Dear Jackson,

I wish for you anything and everything that you ever want. I hope you dream the biggest dreams and that those dreams take you to the highest peaks of the most beautiful horizons. I hope that you never lose your desire to ask questions and that you keep smiling… always.

Kindergarten is a big deal. It’s the start of something special and there is no one more deserving of everything that kindergarten has to offer than you. I don’t know if I’m the perfect dad, I don’t even know if I’m a good dad, but i do know two things… number one: I know that I love you very much… and number two: I know you’re going to be and amazing kindergartener.

I love you, Jackson. Mom loves you and so does your brother. Keep smiling and most of all… just be you.

Congratulations on “graduating” preschool.

Love,

Dad

The Best/Weirdest Birthday Gift Ever

Anyone who knows me, knows that I go hard in the #SockGame. So when I got these from Oliver and Jax for my (40th) birthday I couldn’t wait to wear them!!!

PS: These are the single greatest pair socks I have ever worn in my entire life… they are also the creepiest pair of socks I have ever seen as well!

Bojo

Both of these little boys have had their fair share of interesting vocabulary developments over the years. There had been speech delays in years past, but now there is little quiet time. There has been mispronunciations and completely made-up words.

Children haven’t been conditioned to follow our extremely tricky rules of speech just yet, so they quite often just come up with names for things as their creative brains see fit. One of the best things about watching kids grow up is witnessing them gradually grasping language, but then also free styling with that same language to rename things they can’t say.

Then there’s poor Grandma Nancy who has been called everything but Grandma. The names she’s been called include:

  1. Grammy
  2. Bammy
  3. Bamsters
  4. Bam

And now… “BOJO”

2019 MLB Scouting Report

IF, Guilford, CT. (BA RANK: 6)

Profile: Pre-K • B- Switch T: L •

Committed to Kindergarten for the 2019-2020 season

Has a small, lanky frame with quick feet and quick hands. Fragola doesn’t overwhelm with tools or physicality since he barely eats any fruits or vegetables, but he plays an extremely sound game both offensively and defensively.

At the plate, Fragola has average power from the right side, but he has a short swing with quick hands and is capable of spraying line drives to all fields when batting from the left side of the plate. A solid-average runner during the early summer intra-squad games, scouts have clocked better run times from him this spring, to the point where he’s now considered an above-average runner.

Fragola’s defensive ability is what sets him apart, however, as he has some of the most consistent and reliable hands in this years T-Ball class. He has a huge arm and when he uncorks a throw it reminds scouts of of Henry Rowengartner. Fragola’s instincts and overall feel for playing defense are extremely polished. He seems to make every play that comes to him—making the position look much easier than it actually is. Will work harder if ice cream is promised after games.

How Did I Get so Lucky

Do you ever just wonder why things happen the way that they do? Seriously… think about it… one interaction, one move… just think what might have been the result if one simple thing in your life might have happened differently?l Maybe you don’t get lost in your thoughts as much as I do, but for me, I wonder about everything (it’s just how my brain usually works at 2:00am when I can’t sleep).

So many people feel it’s important to have all the answers, but for me, I think it’s just as important to have many questions. Why things happen?, what might have been?, how can we get better next time?, etc. But the thing that I thinking about the most recently, how did I get so lucky?

Today was one of the of those beautiful days you hope for when spring arrives… not too hot, not too cold… just right. So, I decided to take a break from the “real world,” even if only for a little while. I unplugged. I put the phone away, no laptop, no desktop, no emails and just sat down and watched my sons play with each other. I didn’t step in, I didn’t facilitate… I just was a fly on the wall. How did I get so lucky?

I watched as two little children ran around on the pavement, threw rocks into the woods and listened as they laughed as they called each other’s names. It was about as perfect as it could get. Two children’s laughs. Two brothers who absolutely adore each other playing and enjoying life without a worry in the world. How did I get so lucky?

I watched them run with reckless abandon, the way only toddlers can do, innocent and not knowing what worry is. They fell, the cried and then they got right back up again. Hearing the sound of children enjoying life (the way it should be) was exactly what I needed. It’s a fountain of youth. I guess having kids both ages you and makes you feel younger at the same time. Seriously, how did I get so lucky!???

It doesn’t take long for the real world to set back in… deadlines and meetings and bills… but even with that looming overhead all I kept thinking was… how did I get so lucky?

Historically Famous Photography

There have been countless images that have have captivated the world, but the chances of capturing an iconic photograph are few and far between.

A few of my favorites include:

Muhammad Ali vs. Sonny Liston by: Neil Leife 1965

Flag Raising on Iwo Jima by: Joe Rosenthal 1945

The Loch Ness Monster by: Unknown

The above pictures invoke emotion. The photographers had a keen eye and a sense of importance. They had a feeling that told them what to take a photo of, how to position the camera and exactly when to shoot… and they needed a little luck.

How do I know this? Because last night I became that photographer. I was in the right place at the right time. I had the awareness and the steady hand to capture one of the most iconic photos in our family’s history. Here we see this rare creature in its natural nighttime habitat. Oliver (Oliverius Maximus- Latin). This creature does not sleep through the night and he is mostly nocturnal. Observing him sleeping let alone getting a photo without him waking up and screaming the rest of the night is extremely rare indeed.

It takes talent to be able to what I did last night. It took ninja skills to be able to sneak into Oliver’s room without disturbing him, but I did it. And in the process I ensured that this photo will go down in the annals of historically famous photos.

Happy 5th Birthday Jackson

Dear Jackson,

Today’s the big day… FIVE! 5! V! Cinco! Anyway you say it… you’re a big boy now. You continue to amaze me at every one of life’s hurdles. It’s not about the easy times that show one’s character… it’s the hard times that define us.

You are kind… you are caring… and you are generous. I’m not sure there are three more important qualities anyone can have. I’ve seen you share your toys, hug and kiss your brother when he gets hurt and look after your friends who need help. Yes, sometimes you’re the one who pushed Oliver off the bed, but you always are the first one to help him back up! You need to continue to be that person. Help those in need, look out for others who aren’t as fortunate as you and smile… always smile.

I’ve watched you struggle with things, I’ve watched you get frustrated and I’ve watched you always come out a better person in the end. Sure you’ve made me curse under my breath a few times, but for the most part those days are few and far between.

I can’t believe how fast time goes. You’re five years old already? This morning you told me you don’t need help getting breakfast anymore because, “dad I’m five now, I don’t need help anymore!” Listen dude, you’re always going to need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it. And even if you don’t need it, I’ll still be right there in case you do!

I love you Jackson. Happy fifth birthday!

Love Always,
Dad
